SEPTEMBER 2014 UPDATE.

SEPTEMBER 2014 UPDATE.
“GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, FOR THIS IS GOD’S WILL FOR YOU IN CHRIST JESUS” (1Thess. 5:18).
Sometimes we find it very difficult to appreciate God and thank him for certain situation we find ourselves. People and sometimes turn to blame God for bad things that happen to them. As Christian, the Bible teaches us to give thanks to God in ALL circumstances. Because there are always lessons that we learned from such difficult situation especially in experiences the grace of God. Therefore it’s good to note that in life challenges, which we may find as difficult moments in life, God’s grace is always there to see us overcome those challenges.
HIS GRACE IN MALAFORIA: In the midst of the Ebola challenge, which we are facing in Sierra Leone, God extends his grace and opened our eyes to see a neighborhood that needed to know the salvation of the Lord. Malaforia is a small community not too far from Kabala about a Mile and Half. A Christian school [ by the UMC] is closed by , but there is no Church there. Until When Rev. Edison Kamara, one of the People we sent to be train as the Evangelism coordinator of the Church mobilized some youth in the Kabala Church to go out for Evangelism. In the process, a fellowship was started in the village, with about twenty people in attendance. They have now started meeting every Sunday for worship in a classroom in the village. Yes indeed in the midst of Ebola, souls are won to Christ.

EDUCATING LEADERS ON EBOLA VIRUS: The Ebola deadly Virus that is spreading and killing people in West Africa has no known cure yet. But Prevention is the greatest medicine. We are Fortunate to have the Manual Prepared by the Timothy Leadership Training. [TLT] title “OVERCOMING THE EBOLA EPIDEMIC”. We decided to invite sixty four [64] Church leaders including those that are not CRCSL members, trained them on how to use the Manual in their Churches to educate their members and their community on How to prevent oneself from been infected by the Virus. The manual is divided into four lessons, beginning with the value of Human life as being created by God. Church Leaders were encouraged to teach it to their members especially during Sunday school classes. Ebola has killed more than 2500 people in West Africa, and in Sierra Leone, it has killed nearly 600 people, these are beside unknown persons in the villages that do not report to the Hospital and may have died of the virus.

CHRISTIAN TURN TO GOD TO FIGHT EBOLA: Besides the training of leaders on how to prevent and react, when Ebola affects our communities. Christian in Kabala , across denomination decided to declare a three Days Prayer and fasting on September 15-17 , to pray that God will be merciful and wipe out the virus in Sierra Leone , West Africa, and especially Kabala which is the Only District that has no registered confirmed case of Ebola in Sierra Leone. The prayer program was held at the CRC Church here in Kabala. Every morning at 7-8am they will all come together to pray and repeat same in the evening at 5-6pm, for the three days. This program was applauded by the Leadership of the Local Council [Government].

CES SENSITIZE PEOPLE ABOUT EBOLA: The Christian extension services, has embarked on a sensitization campaign to various communities with the message on Ebola. CES is the development arm of the CRCSL and is sponsor by World Renew. They are giving the messages in the local Languages of the people for them to understand, especially in the rural areas where the krio or the English Language is difficult to Understand. Besides the teaching, they are also providing wash hand basin, sanitizer, soap and Dettol, they are targeting five Chiefdoms especially those that are bordering the Hot spots of the virus in the Country. Koinadugu is sharing border with the Republic of Guinea, Bombali, Kono, and Tonkolili Districts which are hot spots.

THREE DAYS LOCKDOWN: In an effort to curb the spread of the deadly virus, a three days Lockdown was declared by the Government of Sierra Leone, which started on Friday 19th Sept. to Sunday 21st. On Sunday we could not go to Church to worship. In view of that we decided to have a home fellowship. My Family and Sudu, our security Guard and one of our neighbors, [totaling 16] we worship at the porch in our compound. The same happened in many Christian Homes across the Nation. We received Phone calls from some of our church members informing us on how they have prayed together on Sunday in their various homes, and also other days of the Lockdown. The outcome of this exercise is amazing has many suspected cases were found in some homes including deaths. Presently as a result of the house to house sensitization, a highly suspected case in Kabala of someone who sneak in from Lunsar. The patient was immediately returned to Lunsar and the house in which he stayed is presently quarantine for twenty one days. Result from Lunsar indicates that the person is an Ebola patient who has escaped. So we are in a very high risk in Kabala. The people of Kabala [Koinadugu] will know their fate in the next weeks to come, especially People who had come in contact with that person.
Presently the Government has isolated additional Districts because of the rapid spread of the Virus in those areas. These are Bombali [the Headquarters of the Northern Province]; Port Loko, some places in Freetown and Waterloo, Moyamba, and one Chiefdom in Kambia District.

OUR SITUATION IN KABALA: As I did said on the Lockdown, the situation in Kabala is more of fear, anxiety, uncertainty, as we await the result on those Quarantined, in the next couples of weeks. Presently, prices of food items have gone high.  Though the Local task force on Ebola in Kabala do allow certain numbers of trucks to come in a week to bring foods, but they are inadequate, that has made the prices to go up.
Secondly, due to the nature in which Ebola patient was secretly brought into the town a week ago by an Okada rider, [The motorbike commercial riders] the Task force has temporary ban the use of Okada in Kabala until further notice. That too has affected many people, in terms of transportation within the town and to the villages around.
Just as I said in my August report, fellowship with one another has been reduced, no hand shake, visitation to neighbors’ homes has reduced, and life is indeed very difficult. But in all, we give thanks to God that we are alive and well. Should the result come out and some people found Positive, I do not know how the mode of the town will be.
In view of this, we decided to close our offices temporary pending the outcome of the result. I have asked staff to stay at home except if it’s necessary that we come to check our mails or sent. In other word, we are observing a self lockdown [or quarantine] But I can go to the market to find some bread for the family.MMM that reminds me of a situation on the eve of the national lockdown, myself and Sudu went to the town to buy bread that we can use for the periods of days that we will be at home. , To my surprise we could not find any even the vendors that use to call us to come buy bread where nowhere to be found. We were told there is no bread in Town.
APPRECIATION: Beloved in Christ, we are very much aware that Thousands of Christian are praying for us in West Africa. The Situation is indeed worrisome, but we want to say a big thank you to all. We have Faith that one day this virus will go away and life will resume normal. Yes as human, there is that fear that may be we will not see our family again should we be infected. But we have Faith that God will protect us and we shall live to testify of his goodness in our lives. Brethren, Pray for us.
PRAYER REQUEST:
1.       Please continue to pray for the situation here, that God will remove this virus.
2.       Pray that in all the Ebola Challenges, we will remain strong and Faithful to the Lord.
3.        Pray for my Daughter Judith, because of this virus, we could not travel; hence that is affecting her studies.
4.       Pray for the Church in Sierra Leone, that the Brethren will stand firm in their Faith.
5.        Pray for the workers in all the Ebola Isolation centers, their lives are at risk that God will protect them. Many have died; some have left the work because of fear.
6.       Pray for the Family of Pastor David Bull in Freetown. Pastor Bull was a pastor of the Wellington Branch of our Church. He passed away last week in Freetown. We are not sure if he died of Ebola. But pray for his wife and kids that God will comfort them.
7.       Pray for us and the Sudu’s family .that God will protect us against Ebola.
8.       Pray for Pastor Morris Sonnie in Bo as he is using the TLT manual on Ebola, that God will protect him and the pastors as they sensitized the People on Ebola.
9.       Pray for CES staffs that are out in the villages doing sensitization Campaign to various Koranko Communities, in Koinadugu and Tonkolili Districts.
10.   Pray that as the pastors who were trained to us the TLT manual on Ebola, as they teach, let the people have the mindset of the Good Samaritan.

AUGUST 2014 UPDATE.

AUGUST 2014 UPDATE :
“Who shall separate us from the Love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?.... For your sake we face death all day long we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. .. No in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Roms.8:35-37).
GREETINGS. I bring you greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am sure from my July report; I should be in Nigeria by now. But unfortunately things did not work out as planned because of the Ebola outbreak; Mostly airlines suspended their flights to Sierra Leone. Our flights were the first to be affected, and then we tried to get another airline that was fling then. Only about three days to our schedule date, it was cancelled. With this development, there was nothing we can do than to accept it in good fate that it’s not yet time for us to travel. We are still hopeful that whenever the suspension is called off, we will still travel.
MINSTRY WORK. Because of the deadly virus outbreak that has claims several lives, we suspended all activities in the villages and the office. But People still meet on Sundays to worship and to cry unto God to come to our aid in this difficult and scaring moment in the lives of the people. Someone said to me, this is worse than the rebel war. Because the rebel war you can see they are coming and the gun shot and you run for safety. But for the Ebola , you cannot see it with your eyes, and everybody around you is a suspect , there is no longer trust of whom to fellowship with. Because he /she can be a possible carrier. Yet in all this brethren the Bible said” we are more than conquerors”. We believed that in a short while Ebola will go away from our land and we will be able to do our normal work.

SITUATION IN KABALA. Presently Kabala is the only district that has no confirms cases of Ebola in the entire Nation. Our neighboring district of Bombali [ makeni] has 20 confirmed cases, and Tonkolili has 13. Port Loko district which is also on the same region with Kabala has 57. These are mostly new cases. That is why I said its scaring / fearful hearing this report. The report in the entire country shows that, confirm cases are 961, then number of death is 365 and those discharge from hospital is 244. These are figure from the Health ministry via the Council of churches, then there is suspected cases that their results are still been expected which is 96 as of August 27.
Kabala is now under Curfew, from 8pm to 7am. The roads are closed; no one is allowed into the town or goes out. Three weeks ago same closure was observed, but last week they allow trucks coming in with food and those on essential duties to travel. But this week [beginning Monday August 25], it was re-enforce again , because there is a nurse who is a native of Kabala but lives and work in Makeni, was confirmed positive of the virus including husband and Children. So the fear here is that, the relatives in Kabala may be tempted to go visit them. So the best thing is to make sure all roads are closed and no one goes out in the night. Presently, the patients have been moved to the treatment center in Kailahun, but we are still under Curfew. Foods will soon run out, some church members are calling us to assist them with food. Should this continue what do we do? [We may likely experience Ebola hunger]. With all these brethren Ebola will not separate us from the love of Christ.
A NEW COMMUNITY CHURCH.Kandayan is a small community, about 4 miles away from Sambaia Bendugu. God visited them in a special way, through the death of one of their kinsmen, their Chief and others embrace Christianity. The story has it that, one of the elders of the village died, in June, he used to be the leader of the Muslims in the village, when he became sick, and nobody took care of him for several Months. When he died, the Muslims refused to bury him, because he has not attended the Mosque for more than three Months. To them he has become infidel. So his relatives buried him in a traditional way. After the burial, the people said “well the Christian has been coming here and we refused to accept them. So if it were the Christian, they would have buried our brother”, that was how they called on the Christian to come and start the Church. In July we went to the village to encourage them, and prayed with them. The village head ( pa Yegbeh Jalloh) also accepted Christ as his personal Lord, they have now began a worship at the Village. We provide a temporary tent for them to use until the dry session when they will be able to raise a structure.  The Chief has also provided a Land for the Church.

GRANT HOFMAN.This summer we were fortunate to have a Calvin Seminary intern , who came and spent some weeks with us doing ministry . But because of the Ebola and subsequent suspension of Flights to Sierra Leone, he has to cut short his visit time , and World Mission has to evacute him back to USA. It was a timely intervesion because a week after he left, most flights were cancelled , so if he has stayed beyong that, it would have been very diffucult for him to travel out. We really appreciate his coming, a committed young man who is willing to serve where ever the Lord will lead him. Our prayer and hope is that , next year we will , still have some one come for intern in Sierra Leone. Hofman is now back to the Seminary, we wish him all the best, and God’s blessings.

SCHOOL PROJECTS. We continue to give thanks to God and brethren from the North America for their support to the ministry work here. The CRC school building is almost coming to completion, thanks to School for Sierra Leone and Surrey Christian School.
Besides the kabala school building, the Smither CRC in Canada has also assisted the Nanfayie community to renovate their school building that was washed down by rain, and have also erected a Foundation for a three classroom block. God willing, when the rain stops, they will begin the building.

PRAYER REQUEST.
1. Please continue to pray for us that we will be protected against the Ebola Virus.
 2. Pray for West Africa, Ebola is not only killing but the economy of the countries will be affected negatively.
3. We still wish to travel for our home service, but presently we do not know when, so pray that God will open the way for us o travel.
 4. Please pray for the continued growth of the church, especially new area like Kandaya.
APPRECIATION,/ CONCLUSION. Beloved friends and Partners, once more, I would like to express our gratitude to God and to you all for your support to us me and the Sudu for the work here. Our continue prayers is that God will bless you all. We continue to count on your prayers and continue support.

JULY 2014 UPDATE.

JULY 2014 UPDATE FROM SIERRA LEONE
If my People who are called by my name ,will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their Land.”  ( 2 Chro.7:14).
This was the promised of God when King Solomon dedicated the Temple to God. I believed that with the Ebola Challenges we are facing in Sierra Leone, God will hear us as we pray, He will cleanse and heal our Land from this deadly virus that has claimed several lives. Brethren we thank you all for praying with us. It’s indeed a great Challenge but our God will not abandon us. Please continue to pray.
TLT CLASS. The second contact session for the two modules of the year. That is Stewardship and pastoral care was conducted on July 7-11.It was facilitated by Grant Hofman [ A Calvin theological seminary intern] Hofman will be here for six weeks doing ministry work with us. He taught the stewardship modules and I did the pastoral care. With this, the students have completed the two modules which they began in February this year.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING IN THE VILLAGES: Looking at the importance and relevancy of the   stewardship and pastoral care modules in a growing Church like CRC Sierra Leone, this year we decide to take the modules to the Churches in the villages to train the Elders and Deacons who are unable to participates in the regular class, we also taught them, the  work of the elders and deacons in the Church.  We were able to do this in Alkalia, Bendegu  Foria and Kabala.  Mr. Hofman taught the Stewardship and pastoral care, while I did the Elders and Sudu did the deacons. It was really amazing seeing the turn out and the interest to learn from the participants. We were thinking the turn out will be small looking at the farming period they are in now. With this we are encouraged to do more after the farming session.
INPLIMENTING ACTION PLAN: In my update of the Month of May, I gave a report concerning one of the TLT Participants on how he is implementing his action plan. We decided to visit the Farm in Bo area on Tuesday July 22, Hofman, Rev. Sudu and I both went to the farm. It was encouraging to see the Peanut and cassava growing so well in the Farm. They are hoping to harvest the peanut at the end of August. We had wanted to visit some other places as well to see how they are able to achieve their plans, but we could not do it because of the Ebola outbreak, we are very cautious to avoid having too many contacts. But from what we saw Jeremiah and his friends have done, we are pleased with their performance. Below is  Jeremiah Sesay standing inside the Farm, and also MR. Hofman and Rev Sudu watch in admiration , Jeremiah pointing to them the length and breadth of the farm.
ANOTHER STORM: Wow, hope we will survive it. On Wednesday, July 16 at about 10:30 pm , another strong storm came onto the village of Foria , it was so strong that many roofs of houses in the village could not withstand it including the Church building . The strong wind took off the roof flew it to a few yards away from the Building. The following day we arrived from Bendugu with the intentions to come teach in the Church. Only to see that the roof was gone. What do we do? It’s a natural happening so we and the Christian community have to accept the reality, and pick up the pieces of the roof. We thank God that the wall is still standing. WE are now working on re roofing.
SCHOOL CLOSE FOR SUMMER BREAK: Students and pupils of the CRC School Kabala are now home with their parents as the school close for the summer break. The school will reopen in September 8.On July 12; parents were in the school to collect their wards results, and also for the CTA (community Teachers association) meeting. We are glad too that the roofing of the new Classroom has been completed, plastering and finishing is on now. The Contractor is hoping to fish the work by September when the school will reopen for academy work. “We hope so.”

ANOTHER WEDDING IN KABALA: What God has joined together let no person put asunder. That is what the scripture says, it was yet another day of comfort, and Joy in the life of Calvin College Professor, whose heart and Love for Sierra Leone Translated to an intimate relationship and Love that saw them coming together as Husband and wife. Dr. Johanna Kuvyenhoven, got married to Mr. George Isaac Hope of river two Freetown on Saturday July 19 here in Kabala. Our prayer is that both will fine peace and Love with each other and with God.
HOME SERVICE [FURLOUGH]. As I did mention in my last update, God willing we will be going home [Nigeria] for two months, the schedule for our travel has to change for a week to enable my son finis his examination so that we can all travel together. Our travel date is now August 6, and hope to return October 5th. With this you may not be able to receive update from Sierra Leone for the Months of August and September. Nonetheless I will still be checking my mails at certain time and give you some updates of happenings during the home service where necessary.
APPRECIATION:  Beloved, I want to thank you all for your Moral and Financial support to the Mission Field here in Sierra Leone.  My family and I do appreciate it so Much. We are travelling; we are leaving behind the Challenge of Ebola Virus in Sierra Leone. We are going to Nigeria where there is big security challenge of terrorism. Recently it was also reported of one Ebola case of a Liberian Man who has travel to Nigeria and was tested Positive of the Virus. These are big Challenges that we have to contain with. But we know with God by our side, we fear no evil.
PRAYER REQUESTS:
1.       Please pray for us for journey mercy as we travel.
2.       Grant Hofman will be returning to USA on August 16 please do pray for his safety as well.
3.        Continue to pray for Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Now Nigeria for God to intervene in the spread of the Ebola Virus.
4.        Pray for the Church here, October when we return, we will be having an election of a new set of Leaders in our effort to get servants Leaders for the Church. That God will guide us in this Process. In Africa, People do not want to leave power pray that this will not happen with the Young church.
5.       Pray for my health, its twelve years now that I was diagnose to have Diabetes. Though it has been okay since I came here, pray God will continue to give me more healing to continue to serve him. Getting the right treatment and medication here has always been a challenging; But God has always been gracious to me.
6.       Pray for the Sudu Family, Our going home for two Months will be a Little lonely for Tabitha and the Kids, as they have been use to having company with Jemimah when Sudu and I are either in Office or in the Field.
CONCLUSION:  Once again thank for your care and support hope to get back to you in October God willing.

JUNE 2014 UPDATE.

JUNE 2014 UPDATE FROM SIERRA LEONE:
“Praise [be] is to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be Holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will. To the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the one he loves…..  Eph.1:3-6. [NIV].
Welcome to the six Month of the year, we give thanks to God Almighty for his grace, in the first half of the year 2014. A lot of blessings we have experienced in this first half of the year. Despite the tensions and challenges of extremist [terrorists] in Nigeria, we are grateful for the level of tolerance we have here in Sierra Leone. Towards the end of last Month, the health officials in Sierra Leone did confirmed Forty six death of Ebola Virus, in one of the districts of the Country.[ Kailahun] though it’s very far in the eastern part of the country, while we are in the North. Our Faith is on the Lord and we trust God that people will adhere to the advice of health workers so that the virus will not spread to other parts of the country. Ebola was first reported in March in Guinea and later Liberia. All these countries share boarder to Sierra Leone to the North, east and southern part. Please pray for us and the people of Sierra Leone including our neighboring countries that this virus will be control.
In our office, we have introduced a safe measure of hand washing, for both staff and visitors to the office.
SYNOD MEETING: The first Synod meeting to be lead by the National Leaders was held on May 27 and 28 here in Kabala. During the meeting, a New Vice President was elected to replace the former one who was appointed to be the General Secretary. The new Vice president is Pastor Mathias Gabriel of the CRC BO church. With his election, it gives the church an inclusive nature in the leadership of the church. Bo is in the South of Sierra Leone. Also during the meeting, Rosetta F Sesay was elected to be one of the members of the Board of Trustee. The First Female to be involved in the National Leadership of the young Church.

During the meeting, it was reported that based on the strategic plan of the church which was developed in 2012, the Church pledged that they were going to raised at least ten Million Leones [about. $2500] towards the development of their national office. [Multipurpose]. Glory is to God, they are now able to raised nine million Leones, which they have started molding cement blocks towards the project. They now have up to 1200 blocks. To be used for the building. This is a good sign of the people trying to reduce over dependent on oversea funding of all their programs. It is hope that our donors will see this as a good effort by the people and continue to give so that the structure can be build.
RAIN AND STORM:”Of course we need the rain, but we do not like the storm” said one woman whose house was destroyed recently in Yarah village. It was a pitiful sight for poor Widow Siloe Kabbah.  Beside Siloe, the CRC church in Yarah was not also spare by the strong storm that came with heavy down pour on the night of May. 22. In all we give thanks to God for now life was lost. Even though properties were destroyed, but life spared.

Not only in Yarah that we saw this, but it also happened in Nanfayi, But we thank God , the brethren of Smithers CRC in Canada has come to their rescue, Nanfayi it was their school that was washed down, but it’s being rebuild and plastered by the help of Smithers CRC.
CRC SCHOOL STAFF VOLUNTEERS RETURN HOME
We give thanks to God Almighty for the lives of these young ladies who served as volunteer Teachers at the school for the past academic year. Krissi Bucholzt, Sarah Kluitenberg and Nikki Peregaux, they were a great blessings to the School, Church and the Community. Sarah Kluitenberg, apart from her teaching work in the School, she was very active in attending the women fellowship meetings, and in their conference in Foria. Likewise Krissi and Nikki were very active with the Youth in the TPF program. Krissi and Nikki have both returns to Canada and USA respectively. Krissi will be coming not to stay in Kabala but do her private work in Freetown. Sarah has signed to come back in September to continue to teach at the school. We really thank them for their work; our prayer is that God will bless their work. The work on the building of the new Classrooms at the school is also progressing well, the roofing has begun. See picture below, of the various stages of the building.

BAPTISM IN SHEKUYA. As more are coming into the church, catechism classes are conducted to teach the new believers about their faith in the lord and how to grow spiritually, there after they are baptized. On Sunday June 1st, Eleven [11] adults were baptized in the Shekuya Church. We praised the name of the Lord for these harvest of souls, into the vineyard of the Lord. While in Yarah , 28 believers participated in the Holy sacrament of the communion  .[ The Lord’s Supper] administer by Rev. Benjamin K Kororma.

WEDDING IN KABALA. We give thanks to God Almighty for the successful wedding of our members. Frank Foray Sesay is one of the students being train at the seminary in Nigeria. He recently wedded former Miss Mary Nyama Kargbo. The wedding took place at the CRC church in Kabala on Saturday 28 June. It was indeed a great celebration in Kabala town for the wedding. God willing, the Sesays will be going to Nigeria to continue with his studies at the Veenstra theological seminary .Please Pray for the Sesays that God will be with them in their new home and bless their marriage.

APPRECIATION. Once more we want to continue to express our gratitude to you all for your supports for the work here. We thank the lord God for his continue grace upon our lives and our families and the brethren here. Please do continue in your good work of supporting us.
PRAYER REQUEST:
1.       Continue to pray for us and the entire people of this Nation, that God will protect us and our Family and the people against the Ebola Virus.
2.       Pray for those that are infected /affected by the virus especially those that have lost their beloved, that God will comfort them.
3.       Pray for Mr. Grant Hofman a Calvin intern that will be here by this week that the Lord will bring him safely.
4.       God willing the second contact session for the TLT will be coming up on July 7-11. Pray for the Participants and the Facilitators.
5.       We will be going for home service by the end of July, please pray for us as we travel, that God will be with us.
6.       Pray for Foray and Mary that God will bless their marriage and meet their needs as students in Nigeria.
